Sculptural Leather Series


Using the repetition of one image to engrave a series of vintage leather clothing, I explore the sculptural potential within the destruction of the leather fiber structure.  The image itself is of a wall that had been destroyed by fire – the texture if the layers of bubbling paint on the wall create a topographic effect when transferred to the leather. 
The meaning of the image is thus reiterated, as the original wall was burned to create the effect, and the leather is subsequently burned with the image. That fire contains both destructive and and creative properties is the focus of this work, and the awareness of paradox. Leather itself is paradoxical, interprested as a natural material, while no longer having a relationship tp the natural world, due to the toxicity of overproduction. The proximity that leather has to human skin invites a sympathetic relationship to the material as well. The burned, marked, skin of the leather is a reminder of human fragility and resilience.

Watery Cotton Paintings


The process for this series relies on my collaboration with natural forces
so the final product results purely visa chance and intuition. The dye itself
reacts to the sun, causing variation based on the energy level available at
the time of painting and exposure. In this way, this process represents
teamwork with the sun and heat based energy. Additionally, I trust my
inherent body knowledge to determine the subsequent layers of dye, in regards
to color, consistency, and placement. The end result is thus revealed through
a series of intuitive reactions. Chance then becomes an element of the work,
