FAITH GROWN SOFT
The mycelium material has partially consumed a dress, that was part of a dance piece and living sculpture; performed by Celia Shaw, accompanied by a sound piece by Zarina Nares.
The dance piece serves as a contrast to the visionary quality of the material with a dark and surreal tone. The visuals of the performance are derived from the ideals of the spiritual cults in the California 1970s – a period in which many people, driven by a lack of purpose, found union by looking for collective acceptance, surrendering their identity to cult leaders. Sasha is interested in drawing this history in parallel to today’s consumer culture, in which people are drawn to discover their identity through brand names. Such brands are often insensitive to the consumer’s actual needs and are equally megalomaniac as the cult leaders of before.
